"My journey began with the Interior Design Institute when I discovered their advertisement in an issue of the New Zealand House & Garden magazine. I was searching for an Interior Design Course that is up to date with course content, New Zealand based and with reputable tutors. I found it!

The Interior Design Institute's website was very informative and user friendly. Once I had completed registration and been advised of my tutor, I was able to access my first module.

Now, I have graduated with a Diploma in Interior Design, having completed the twelve modules in the course.

I am thrilled with my achievement. It was wonderful to see how my family was eager to see my progress after submitting each module. My children watched me as I studied and have commented on how proud they are of me.

I would recommend this course:
  • The content of each module was informative and professionally presented. Each assignment challenges you.
  • The ease of access on-line for each module, and in your own time, at your own pace, suited my lifestyle beautifully.
  • The efficiency and feedback from your personal tutor was excellent.
  • The professional advice provided by the course enabled you to learn how to take a client's brief and present your designs. You also learnt how to set up in business and promote yourself. All this advice I found invaluable.
The significant benefit to me personally from completing this diploma is my growing self confidence. The professional guidelines given for all areas of interior design have given me a fabulous foundation to offer my services in the building and design industry.

Thank you to all concerned for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me."

"My passion for interior design has always been strong, and it has always been in the back of my mind to do something to turn this passion into my job. Finding the Interior Design Institute’s online course was the start I needed.

As I was about to start the course, I was apprehensive, that I would struggle with the course (my own self doubts). My fears where immediately removed - the course information is excellent, well written, interesting, and the student support excellent. Sarah, my tutor, was absolutely brilliant, and nothing was ever a problem. Communication was fast, and even the constructive criticism from an assignment, made you feel really good. It was great that you have a year to do the course at your own pace – I completed the course in  6 months and it has been an absolute pleasure to do. I would highly recommend online study - freedom to study when you want to, and not having to worry about child care, or transport, is fantastic.

The Interior Design Institute course is really a great thing - it has allowed me the confidence and knowledge to start my own freelance interior design business. I always felt I had the basic instincts and passion for Interior design, but the course has now given me the actual tools and systems and solutions and understanding, to put all this into a working business; and that is the key for me. I am currently working on setting up my Interior Design business, and it will launch with excitement and enjoyment very soon...."

"The Interior Design Institute was a great choice of study for me. It was enjoyable from start to finish. Studying online made it very easy for me to work full time and study at night without needing to be anywhere at any particular time and it meant I work around my busy lifestyle.

The student support was a great tool to be able to use at anytime and I loved being able to communicate with my tutor Ali. I always received a fast reply to any questions I had and I always felt as though they had my best interest at heart. They were very encouraging, which made me want to do my very best.

Even though I have already been working in the industry for 6 years now, I still learnt a lot and feel more confident with my work. Being able to come away with material that I can add to my portfolio is great also.

I would recommend this course to anyone that is interested in Interior Design. It gives you a true taste for what interior designing involves and you will learn whether this is the industry is for you or not.

I work for Resene as the Waikato and Coromandel Colour Consultant and love my job. A few of the other colour consultants have also done this course and it is well recognised within our company. It is all you need as a qualification to get into the industry.

If there was any other study to be offered by this institute I wouldn't think twice about signing up to it, I loved every minute of it. In fact I actually miss the excitement of finding out what the next assignment is!

You are able to view some of my work on Facebook by going to either the 'Resene' page or

'l u c y d e s i g n & c o l o u r' page.

ENJOY!..."

"Learning is now part of my life. Having completed a degree and the beginnings of a Masters in my mid 40's whilst a mother, wife, friend, daughter and a perfectionist, my body decided enough was enough. ME/Chronic fatigue thus entered my life. What now? A complete lifestyle change was suggested by numerous health professionals. So work was lessened to part-time and eventually total resignation, and my Masters was now not possible. To travel to weekend classes, find parking, and be involved in group work with plenty of in-depth discussions saw me tongue tied and at a loss for words. The vibrant, energetic, sociable and superwoman Caroline was now a thing of the past.

Good news though, as I turned to colour and began beadwork; attending the occasional two hour class. My confidence grew again as I enjoyed playing with my colourful beads and churning out many different designs. I even sold some of my work, and friends and family were constantly on the receiving end of my earrings, bangles, necklaces and rings. Oh what fun, and what a wonderful little pastime! Having accomplished what I wanted to with beads, I now needed to learn more. Limitations imposed on me saw a realization of the inability to sign up for the Masters course again, so instead I looked for online learning.

Since childhood I have had a love of fabrics, fashion, textures, colour, art, entertainment and architecture, but I could not draw so assumed I could not go into interior design. However, this was a new chapter in my life and my passion for interior design was always evident in our homes, parties and events so I looked at online learning opportunities.

The Interior Design Institute is an amazing learning forum and I am delighted to have completed the course within my own time and space whilst receiving the support, encouragement, suggestions and constant feedback from my tutor. I signed on around the end of August 2007, but was only able to begin mid November; finishing all the assignments in mid February. I had 12 weeks or 12 months to complete the course, and I managed to do it at my own pace in between the odd bout of ME/chronic fatigue.

What I have learnt will be instrumental, as I now recognize that social work and community development was for a previous chapter in my life and the ME/chronic fatigue limitations imposed on me have encouraged my ever latent creative side, which will see me open my own little interior design company.

Thank you IDI for bringing out the real ME! Bring on another online learning course please!"

"Thank you so much to the Interior Design Institute for developing such a fantastic, informative and personally challenging course. At the age of 37, I am so excited at my change in career, and feel fortunate to be doing something I love and am passionate about!

Upon leaving school, I trained as an Occupational Therapist and worked in this field for over 10 years. I enjoyed this career though felt I needed a change from the health sector, and wanted something that was flexible to accommodate my young children. I needed another channel for my creative energy and have always loved interior design. In the past, I have enjoyed renovating houses, and am not content unless I am planning my next project! I have also furnished and decorated holiday rental houses, in which people are always commenting on the colours, style and design.

This prompted me to investigate possible Interior Design Courses and I was delighted to find this diploma advertised on the internet. It has suited my needs perfectly. I took the year to complete it but it meant I could work around my other commitments, and not feel pressured. The content of the course has given me the tools to go out and start an interior design business. The amazing support from my tutor, Ali has given me the confidence to feel I can succeed in this new career. She was always available to answer my queries, and her encouraging words and constructive feedback were always greatly appreciated after each module. Now having received my diploma, I do intend to start my own business. I am currently looking into having business cards made and completing my business plan. I have 2 friends who I am currently working with on their renovations. Although they have both offered to pay, at this stage I just want the experience and to build up my portfolio.

So, in conclusion, I feel I have started a new chapter in my life. I am excited about my new business prospects, the new challenge and being able to do a job that involves working with people and making a difference in their homes or businesses. I would highly recommend this course to anyone contemplating a career in Interior Design. It is also great for those not wanting to take it to that level but wanting the skills to make their own house look fabulous. Thank you again to the Interior Design Institute, and my wonderful tutor."

Julie Teale

"I have always been interested in Interior Design and have always done it as a hobby in the past, sometimes helping friends and family to make their spaces more workable, comfortable and visually pleasing.

I can often see how good a space could be when I enter it, but have never known how to get training on how to formalise this interest into something I could use to earn a living. I have children and work full-time and so in order to train in this field I needed a course that would allow me flexibility in time and allow me to study from home, mostly after the kids were in bed.

This course gave me this flexibility, the training I wanted and so much more. I found the modules well rounded and easy to understand and the assignments really put the concepts into practice.

I also found my tutors feedback invaluable and it was specific enough to allow me to see any areas I had missed. The modules will also make excellent reference tools for the future and I would highly recommend this course to anyone thinking of entering Interior Design as a profession, or even if you just want to learn more for your own interest and to enhance your own home."

Vicki Berkahn

I thoroughly recommend the Diploma in Interior Design through the Interior Design Institute, particularly if you wish to continue working whilst studying.  The learning is self-paced so you can dive into it when you have a bit of time up your sleeve, or leave it alone during your busy work periods.

The support from the Institute, and the prompt marking and return of assignments was excellent - it is always an anxious time waiting for results!  My tutor always gave me encouraging and constructive feedback which gave me the confidence to continue learning the next topic in Interior Design, and continue exploring an entirely new world to me.

If you are wanting an exciting escape and the ability to explore an alternative career option then this course will keep you totally engaged, as it is logically designed and you are always anticipating what the next interesting and relevant module will be about.

I am looking forward to applying my new skills and building a sideline career to fit in with other work and family commitments that I have.

Kazandra June Smith

"The Interior Design Institute has taught me so much. I didn't realise there was so much detail in becoming an Interior Designer. This course has given me the confidence and motivation to make my dream a reality.

After spending 5 years working in law firms I felt I was at a dead end, doing the same thing day in and day out and I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere and I was working long hours and never really spending time with my family. While searching google for short courses, this course popped up and I decided to give it ago. Right from the very first module, my interest in this field grew, I was always a creative person and never really found the right outlet for it until stumbling upon this course. Now I have an outlet for my creativity as well as helping people to transform their homes into beautiful homes.

My tutor Ali Daniell was so supportive and very motivating. She was always very quick to reply to any questions that I had and I found it very easy to come to her with these questions. The modules and assignments were very hands on and this made the process very enjoyable. It also gave me the freedom to fit the course around my children and even my 8 year old was interested in some of the assignments I was working on.

I am currently in the process of starting up my business and I am really looking forward to working with all sorts of people and properties. I really do have the IDI to thank for giving me something to look forward to. I have found my calling at last..."

Nicola Stratton

"I live in a small town south of Dunedin called Oamaru. There isn't a lot of options to do courses here but I was very keen to study interior design and continue working full time.

My tutor was friendly and very helpful, For example, when I was stuck on one assignment she helped me and the communication via email was excellent.

This course was great because it was online, I didn't have to wait for books or papers to arrive in the post. I could just log on and get all the information from the module I needed and then easily submit my assignment online.

I would recommend this course to anyone. Some people may be wary as it's completely online but only basic computer skills are needed and they have helpful tips if you do get stuck.

The course covered a wide range of subjects and was great for understanding the whole field of interior design. The course was very interesting and the assignments were designed to make you feel like you were working for a client, it wasn't just writing answers down.

I plan on one day getting into interior design in a larger city, but until then I have been helping out with our home renovations and the course has been really helpful in choosing colours and suggesting ideas..."

...Nicola Stratton, Oamaru.

Raewyn Barlow

"Since High School I had always had an interest in interior design but had never really done anything about pursuing this any further.  Instead I studied a completely different profession but have always wanted to do something more creative.

I happened to discover this Diploma course online and after a few weeks decided this is the path I would pursue.

Being a single Mother I found this course so much more practical than having to attend classes.  The ability to do things at your own pace was not only helpful but encouraged me to challenge myself with being motivated and focussed.

Sarah [my tutor] was second-to-none.  No matter how silly [I thought] the questions were that I'd ask her, she'd always make sure her answers and suggestions were well articulated and easy to understand.  The student support team were also fantastic, prompt with any queries and keeping you posted on any up-coming external workshops.

If this is something you've thought about doing but have stalled on making a decision, I'd say just do it.  The satisfaction in finishing 12 modules and having a whole new knowledge base with relatively little stress involved is fantastic..."

"When my husband and I sold our business after 22 years I found myself with no job and no formal qualifications. I asked myself"At my age what do I want to do and what would I enjoy if I was to study"?

It didn't take me or my family long to answer this as for many years I have had a addiction for buying outdated homes with potential, renovating them and then selling looking for our next project. Feedback was always that our homes were well designed.

The deciding factor for me to do this course was when neighbours asked"Who is your Interior Designer"? for the house we are renovating now.

Studying from home with"The Interior Design Institute" was immediately attractive to me as I could carry on with our home renovations and study at my own pace without the pressure of handing in assignments by a set date. I was always on call at home to make major design decisions and our builders and tradesman took great pleasure in assisting me with my assignments and they also all looked forward to my marks.

My family were always excited for me when I was doing my assignments and especially when I was waiting for my results and feedback. The thrill of scoring some perfect marks was such a boost to my confidence and I am so proud of myself and so are my family and friends. I always looked forward to a new module/assignment and a new challenge. Help was always on hand from my tutor Sarah if I needed it.

I have really enjoyed, learnt and achieved so much knowledge and ideas from this course and I hope to find employment in this field soon or start my own business..."

A'ndrea Simonsen

"I have spent my working life in the fashion and interior design retail sectors. Although I have always had a natural 'talent' for colour and design, I also felt like a 'cheat' selling myself as an Interior Designer simply on the basis of natural ability and a BA degree.

It wasn't until I began my course with the Interior Design Institute that I was confirmed as a 'cheat'!!! I had been blissfully unaware that beneath my ability to make a space look good were principles, elements and a history of design....! (Besides creating floor-plans and perspective drawings!) ahh...!

Thank you IDI for opening my eyes to the reasons behind why I make my design decisions! I now have a knowledge that is invaluable to both myself and my future clients. And more importantly, the skills to be able to present them in a professional format.

Thank you for the fantastic support and knowledge you have provided. I now feel confident and able to justify my design schemes by backing them up with the wonderful education I have gained. (and earned!)..."

Deborah Sylvester

"My love for interiors started at a young age. Hours were spent in my dolls house as a child. However, actual dolls were not welcome in the house as they simply were a burden and did nothing more than to mess up the well designed spaces!
After seeing IDI’s advertisement in the newspaper one day I pondered about what should stop me from pursuing a dream job in interior design. I thank friends who recognised my creative flair and passion for interiors and encouraged me to undertake this course. I’m so glad I did.

I was SO excited to start this course. Going back to part time study felt like a real stretch and honestly felt risky to be assessed on something you really care about. But my tutor, Ali, was helpful and encouraging, skillfully guiding me through each module and assignment. Having such a skilled and trained professional work alongside you is a definite confidence booster not to mention a great privilege.

Online study suited my lifestyle perfectly and made this course achievable for me. My printed modules are now volumes on my bookshelf which continue to be a helpful reference and resource, and it is with great pride and a sense of achievement that I look on my framed Diploma Certificate.

A lot of personal significance was gained for me and I believe this course and the knowledge I’ve gained has given me the confidence to take my myself and my passion for interiors more seriously.

Only 6 weeks after completing the course I engaged my very first client company and interior design project and I love that there are now future prospects of working in my passion as paid skilled employment.

Thanks to the team at IDI who have provided this course, support and qualification and who continue to include me in a network of updates on upcoming workshops, events and trips in the design industry..."

"I was an Early Childhood Education Teacher when our girls were little. After years of courses at the university, I obtained my Bachelors degree in Teaching and taught English at Secondary and Tertiary schools. But, when my daughters graduated, I felt I had ‘been there and done that’ and needed a change as well….

I have always had a ‘knack’ and a passion for Interior Design, so when I saw IDI’s advertisement in House and Garden for an on-line course, I thought; ”that’s me!”.

I really enjoyed studying the modules at my own pace and they were always assessed within a few days. I particularly liked ‘The History of Design’ module, as it jogged my memory on the different genres. ‘Styles of Design’, however, taught me how to speak the “design – language” fluently, which enables me to communicate with clients accurately.

I learnt new skills such as making sample boards, floor plans and perspective drawings on-line. These tools are of great value when making a presentation for clients. The course gave me enough confidence to start my own business, called Ideas.

The modules are still a great reference tool to me and I appreciate the follow up service of the Interior Design Institute. They do not only continue to include me with updates on upcoming workshops, events and trips in the design industry but my tutor, Ali, is also most helpful with any questions I  have regarding setting up my business.

Thank you IDI, for the great knowledge you share and the valuable support you give!..."

"IDI has changed my life! I have never really known where I wanted to go with my career, all I knew was that I loved design and anything to do with it. Before I jumped into a huge degree at uni I decided to look around for a diploma I could do that fit into my busy lifestyle. I found IDI on Google and after reading all the testimonials, I decided to give it ago. 8 months later I am in love with Interior Design and have even enrolled to further my study in architectural design!

The Modules were well written, interesting and covered everything you need to know to start a career or expand your knowledge in Interior Design. I get comments from my clients all the time about all the knowledge I have! Its a real compliment and makes you feel great that the diploma has really helped.

My tutor Rebecca, was lovely. She always marked my assignments promptly and her constructive criticism really boosted my confidence.

With all my knowledge I have learned at IDI, it has helped me step up into my role as Design consultant for a top flooring company. I hope to one day run my own business in design.

This course is very highly recommended! Big thanks to the Team at IDI (especially Rebecca).

Thanks for helping me find my dream =)..."
